What is the energy meter program?
The City of Edmonds received an Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act for an energy meter rental program. The City offers residents and small business owners the opportunity to check out an energy use meter. The program aims to enable community members to quantify the energy consumption of various electronics and teach them how to reduce energy use. Two types of energy meters are available: Kill-A-Watt EZ and Belkin Conserve Insight.
Why is it important to calculate energy use?
According to the U.S. Energy Information Agency, residential and commercial buildings consume nearly 40 percent of the energy used nationwide. Appliances and small electronics consume two-thirds of the energy used in U.S. households. As consumer electronics become more common, this number will grow.
